Teacher answer key

  1. Warm-up: answers will vary.

  3. Reading comprehension: 1) Emotions and behaviour can influence and spread to other people. 2) Any three of facial expressions, posture, tone of voice and hand gestures. 3) They can make the speaker seem more confident and engaging. 4) It can invite a fuller answer about something the person cares about. 5) Our words, gestures, tone and questions affect the atmosphere of a conversation, so we can use them deliberately.
  4. Grammar: suitable answers include 1 can; 2 could; 3 might/can; 4 should.
  5. Listening script: “Maya is talking with Leo after class. At first, Leo is looking down and giving very short answers. Maya notices that he seems uncomfortable, so she smiles, turns towards him and asks, ‘What was the most interesting thing you learned today?’ Leo looks up, starts using his hands as he talks and gives a much longer answer. Maya realises that a thoughtful question and friendly body language can change the feeling of a conversation.”
    Listening answers: 1) He is looking down and seems uncomfortable. 2) What was the most interesting thing you learned today? 3) He looks up, uses his hands and gives a longer answer. 4) A thoughtful question and friendly body language can change a conversation.
