In New Zealand, many international students go to high school. School usually starts at about 8:30 or 9:00 in the morning and finishes at about 3:00 in the afternoon. Many students wear a school uniform.
Students study different subjects, such as English, maths, science and social studies. Some schools also teach te reo Māori, the Māori language. Students can often choose subjects such as art, music, technology or physical education.
Classes may be different from classes in a student's home country. Students often work with a partner or in small groups. They may use computers, do projects and ask the teacher questions. Teachers want students to take part and share their ideas.
At morning tea and lunchtime, students can eat, talk with friends and relax. Many students bring lunch from home. Some schools also have a canteen where students can buy food.
There are many activities outside the classroom too. Students may join a sports team, music group or school club. School trips are another way to learn and see more of New Zealand.
Starting at a new school can feel difficult at first, especially when English is not your first language. It is okay to ask for help. Teachers and other students can help you understand school routines and make new friends.
