Sleep is not simply a time when the brain switches off. During sleep, the brain organises information and strengthens memories. This is one reason why sleep is important for learning. A student who studies late into the night may spend more time with a textbook, but tiredness can make it harder to concentrate and remember information the next day. A regular routine can help. Going to bed at a similar time each night prepares the body for sleep. Reducing bright screens before bed may also help because their light can make the brain feel more awake. Good sleep cannot replace careful study, but it helps the brain use what has been learned.
