10 Everyday Speaking Situations

Practise useful English for real life. Read the situation, try your own answer, then listen to a model and speak again.

How to practise

  1. Read the situation and useful phrases.
  2. Answer aloud in your own words first.
  3. Open the model answer and listen.
  4. Try again, changing the details to make the answer your own.

Everyday situations

1 · Ordering food

Server: “Are you ready to order?”

Useful: Could I have …, please? · I’d like … · Can I also have …?

2 · Asking for directions

You need to find the library. Ask someone for help.

Useful: Excuse me … · How do I get to …? · Is it far from here?

3 · Making an appointment

Receptionist: “What day would suit you?”

Useful: Is Tuesday possible? · Do you have anything in the morning? · That time is fine.

4 · Returning something to a shop

Assistant: “How can I help?”

Useful: I’d like to return … · It doesn’t fit. · I bought it yesterday.

Call a business and ask to speak to someone.
