Amelia Earhart became one of the world’s most famous aviators after setting several flying records. In 1932, she became the first woman to fly solo nonstop across the Atlantic. Five years later, she attempted to fly around the world near the equator with navigator Fred Noonan. On 2 July 1937, their aircraft disappeared while approaching tiny Howland Island in the central Pacific. A massive search failed to find them. The most widely accepted explanation is that the aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed into the ocean, although alternative theories continue to attract public interest.
