Cleopatra VII was the last active ruler of ancient Egypt's Ptolemaic kingdom. She became queen in 51 BCE and ruled during a time when Rome was becoming increasingly powerful. Cleopatra was highly educated and could speak several languages. She formed political alliances with the Roman leaders Julius Caesar and later Mark Antony. After Antony and Cleopatra were defeated by Octavian at the Battle of Actium, their position became impossible to defend. Both died in 30 BCE, and Egypt soon became part of the Roman Empire. Cleopatra has remained famous for more than two thousand years, although films and legends often mix fact with imagination.
