Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in Maryland around 1822. She escaped in 1849, but instead of remaining safely in the North, she returned south many times to guide other enslaved people to freedom through a secret network known as the Underground Railroad. During the American Civil War, Tubman also worked for the Union as a nurse, scout and spy. In 1863, she helped lead an armed raid along the Combahee River that freed hundreds of enslaved people. After the war, she supported causes including women’s voting rights. Her courage made her one of the best-known figures in American abolitionist history.
