Mohandas Gandhi became a leading figure in India’s struggle against British colonial rule. Trained as a lawyer, he spent years in South Africa, where he challenged racial discrimination. Gandhi developed methods of nonviolent resistance that included marches, boycotts and civil disobedience. In 1930, he led the famous Salt March to protest British control and taxation of salt. His ideas influenced civil rights leaders in other countries. India became independent in 1947, although the country was also partitioned amid terrible violence. Gandhi was assassinated in January 1948.
