Marie Curie was born in Warsaw in 1867 and later moved to Paris to study science. Working with Pierre Curie, she investigated mysterious radiation emitted by uranium. She coined the term “radioactivity” and helped discover two elements, polonium and radium. In 1903, she shared the Nobel Prize in Physics; in 1911, she received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. During the First World War, she promoted mobile X-ray units to help doctors locate injuries. Long-term exposure to radiation damaged her health, at a time when its dangers were not fully understood.
