At the beginning of the twentieth century, explorers were competing to reach the South Pole. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and British naval officer Robert Falcon Scott led rival expeditions. Amundsen had learned important Arctic travel skills and chose dogs and skis for his journey across Antarctica. His team also carefully planned food supplies and routes. Amundsen and four companions left their base in October 1911. They travelled across the ice and climbed through mountains onto the high Antarctic plateau. On 14 December 1911, the five men reached the South Pole. They planted the Norwegian flag and left a tent and message. Scott's team arrived more than a month later and discovered that Amundsen had beaten them. Tragically, Scott and his four companions died during their return journey. Amundsen's team returned safely to base in January 1912. His success depended on careful preparation, suitable equipment, experience with dogs and skis, and efficient travel. The race is remembered both for Amundsen's achievement and for the terrible fate of Scott's party.
