The Amazon rainforest covers a huge area of South America and contains the largest tropical rainforest on Earth. Most of it lies in Brazil, but it also extends into several neighbouring countries. The forest supports an extraordinary variety of plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms, including many species that scientists are still studying. The Amazon River and its tributaries carry vast amounts of freshwater across the region. The rainforest also stores enormous quantities of carbon in its vegetation and soils, linking it to the global climate system. Indigenous peoples have lived in and managed Amazon environments for thousands of years. Today deforestation, fire, mining and other pressures threaten parts of the forest, making conservation an international concern.
