The ancient Olympic Games were held in Greece long ago. Many centuries later, a French educator named Pierre de Coubertin helped create a modern international Olympic movement. The first modern Olympic Games opened in Athens, Greece, in 1896. Athletes from several countries competed in sports such as athletics, swimming, cycling and gymnastics. Only men competed in 1896; women joined the Olympics in 1900. The Games later grew into one of the world’s largest sporting events.
