The adult human brain weighs roughly 1.3 to 1.4 kilograms but coordinates an extraordinary range of functions, from movement and language to memory and emotion. It contains tens of billions of neurons connected through vast networks. Different regions specialise in particular tasks, yet most complex activities depend on multiple areas working together. The brain can also change with experience, a capacity known as neuroplasticity. Scientists study the brain using methods including MRI, electrical recording and experiments with patients. Despite rapid progress, major questions about consciousness, memory and neurological disease remain unresolved.
