Around 1450, Johannes Gutenberg developed a printing system in Europe that combined movable metal type with an efficient press and suitable ink. Printing existed earlier in Asia, but Gutenberg’s method helped make large-scale book production much faster in Europe. Before this, books copied by hand could take months and were expensive. Printed books became more widely available, helping ideas travel between cities and countries. Printing contributed to changes in education, religion, science and politics. Gutenberg’s Bible became one of the most famous early European printed books.
