The Statue of Liberty with New York City in the distance
The Statue of Liberty. EnglishDrills.org illustration.
The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. France gave the statue to the United States, and it was dedicated in 1886. The French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the figure, while engineer Gustave Eiffel helped create its internal metal structure. The statue represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty, holding a torch above her head and a tablet in her other hand. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, millions of immigrants arrived in New York by ship, and the statue became closely connected with ideas of freedom and a new beginning. Today it is one of the most recognisable monuments in the United States.
