Tutankhamun became pharaoh of ancient Egypt while still a child and died when he was about nineteen. For centuries he was not among Egypt’s most famous rulers. That changed in 1922, when archaeologist Howard Carter discovered his tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Unlike many royal tombs, it still contained thousands of objects, including jewellery, furniture and the famous gold funerary mask. The discovery created worldwide excitement and gave archaeologists an extraordinary collection for studying royal life and burial practices in ancient Egypt.
