William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet and actor whose works have been performed for more than four centuries. Born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, he later became involved with the theatre in London. Shakespeare wrote comedies, histories and tragedies, including A Midsummer Night's Dream, Henry V, Hamlet and Macbeth. His plays explored ambition, love, jealousy, power, family and many other human experiences. Shakespeare wrote for live performance, so his language was designed to be spoken and heard as well as read. The exact details of some parts of his life remain uncertain, but surviving plays and poems made his influence enormous. Today his works are translated, adapted and performed around the world.
