A Day at the Market

Every Sunday morning, the old town square becomes a busy market. Farmers arrive early with boxes of fruit and vegetables, while other sellers bring bread, cheese, flowers and handmade gifts. By nine o'clock, the square is full of people.
Last Sunday, Mateo went to the market with his aunt. First, they bought tomatoes, carrots and a large bag of apples. Mateo's aunt spoke to one farmer about how he grew his vegetables. The farmer explained that he tried to use fewer chemicals and save water.
After shopping, Mateo and his aunt stopped at a food stall. They shared a warm cheese pastry and listened to a musician playing guitar nearby. Before they left, Mateo bought a small wooden bird for his younger sister.
Mateo likes the market because shopping there feels different from shopping in a supermarket. He can meet the people who make or grow the products, try local food and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
