Albert Einstein transformed modern physics not through a single discovery but through a cluster of ideas that challenged established assumptions. In 1905, his “annus mirabilis,” he published papers on Brownian motion, the photoelectric effect, special relativity and mass-energy equivalence. His explanation of the photoelectric effect later contributed to his Nobel Prize. A decade later, general relativity described gravity not simply as a force but as the curvature of spacetime produced by mass and energy. A 1919 eclipse expedition found evidence consistent with Einstein’s prediction that gravity bends light, bringing him international fame. Although his name became synonymous with genius, Einstein’s work emerged from intense engagement with existing science and vigorous debate with other physicists.
