Leonardo da Vinci is remembered chiefly as the painter of the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, yet painting represented only one part of his extraordinary intellectual life. Born in 1452 in the Tuscan town of Vinci, Leonardo trained in Florence, where art, engineering and scientific observation frequently overlapped. His surviving notebooks reveal an almost relentless curiosity. He investigated anatomy by dissecting human bodies and produced remarkably detailed drawings of muscles, bones, organs and the developing fetus. He studied water, geology, optics and the mechanics of flight. His pages also contain designs for machines resembling helicopters, parachutes and armoured vehicles, although many were never constructed and some would not have worked with the materials available to him. Leonardo's method was strikingly visual: he observed closely, drew what he saw and then used drawings to test ideas. He often wrote in mirror script, moving from right to left. Despite his enormous reputation today, he completed relatively few paintings, partly because he experimented with techniques and frequently moved on to new problems. His importance lies not in having secretly invented every modern machine, as popular myths sometimes suggest, but in the unusual way he connected art, observation, engineering and questions about nature.
