DNA carries genetic information used in the growth, functioning and reproduction of living organisms. In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick proposed the famous double-helix model, drawing on crucial experimental evidence produced by researchers including Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins. Franklin’s X-ray diffraction work was especially important for understanding DNA’s structure. The molecule consists of two strands with paired chemical bases. The order of these bases stores information. Modern genetics has transformed medicine, biology, forensics and the study of human ancestry, while also creating difficult questions about privacy and genetic data.
