Mexican artist Frida Kahlo was born in 1907. As a child she had polio, and at eighteen she was badly injured in a bus accident. During her long recovery, she began painting more seriously. Many of her paintings are self-portraits that explore pain, identity, family and Mexican culture. Kahlo married muralist Diego Rivera, and their relationship was both creative and difficult. She received international attention during her lifetime, but her fame grew enormously after her death in 1954. Today her distinctive face, clothing and art are recognised around the world.
