Mount Everest is the highest mountain above sea level. It stands in the Himalayas on the border between Nepal and China. Its summit is more than 8,800 metres high. The air near the top has much less oxygen than at sea level, and the weather can change quickly. In 1953, Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa mountaineer, became the first climbers confirmed to reach the summit. Many people have climbed Everest since then, but the mountain remains dangerous.
