Amelia Earhart was an American pilot. She was born in 1897. At a time when few women were pilots, Earhart became famous for flying long distances. In 1932, she became the first woman to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean. The flight was difficult because of bad weather and problems with the aircraft. She landed safely in Northern Ireland. Earhart encouraged women to follow their dreams and try new careers. In 1937, she tried to fly around the world with navigator Fred Noonan. Their aircraft disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean. No one knows exactly what happened. Her disappearance remains one of aviation's famous mysteries.
