Neil Armstrong was an American pilot and astronaut. In July 1969, he travelled to the Moon with Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins on Apollo 11. Collins stayed in the command spacecraft while Armstrong and Aldrin landed in a small craft called Eagle. On 20 July, Armstrong climbed down a ladder and became the first person to walk on the Moon. Aldrin joined him soon after. They collected rocks, took photographs and carried out experiments. Millions of people watched the historic mission on television. The astronauts later returned safely to Earth.
