Rosa Parks lived in the United States. In 1955, laws in Montgomery, Alabama, treated Black and white bus passengers differently. One evening, Rosa was travelling home by bus. She was told to give her seat to a white passenger. Rosa refused. Police arrested her. Her arrest helped begin a long bus boycott led by local civil rights activists, including Martin Luther King Jr. Many Black residents stopped using the buses for more than a year. The protest helped challenge unfair segregation laws. Rosa Parks became an important symbol of the American civil rights movement.
