In 1914, explorer Ernest Shackleton sailed south with an ambitious goal: to cross Antarctica from coast to coast. His ship, Endurance, entered the Weddell Sea, but dense pack ice trapped it before the expedition could reach land. For months, the ship drifted with the ice. Eventually the pressure became so powerful that Endurance was crushed and sank in November 1915. Shackleton and his 27 men were now stranded on the ice with lifeboats and limited supplies. They camped on moving ice until it broke apart, then travelled by lifeboat to the remote and uninhabited Elephant Island. Although they had reached land, there was almost no chance of rescue because ships rarely passed nearby. Shackleton therefore chose five men to join him in the largest lifeboat, James Caird. They attempted an extraordinary open-ocean journey of about 1,300 kilometres to South Georgia, navigating through freezing seas and storms. They reached the island, but landed on the opposite side from the whaling stations. Shackleton and two companions then crossed the mountainous interior on foot without proper climbing equipment. After reaching help, he organised repeated rescue attempts. In August 1916, the men left on Elephant Island were finally rescued. Remarkably, every member of the Endurance party survived. The expedition failed in its original objective, yet became one of history's most celebrated stories of leadership and survival.
