Deep inside Earth, rock can become extremely hot and melt. This melted rock is called magma. Magma can rise through cracks in Earth’s crust. Gas is also trapped inside it. When pressure becomes very strong, magma and gas can escape through a volcano. At the surface, magma is called lava. Some eruptions are gentle, while others are explosive. Volcanoes can be dangerous, but they also create new land and rich soil. Scientists watch active volcanoes to look for signs of future eruptions.
