Louis Braille was born in France in 1809. When he was three, an accident damaged his eye. Later, he became blind. At school, Louis wanted to read books, but books for blind people were very large and difficult to use. As a teenager, he developed a system of small raised dots. Readers could feel the dots with their fingers. Different patterns represented letters and numbers. His system became known as Braille. Today, people around the world use Braille to read and write. Louis did not become rich from his invention, but his simple idea opened books and education to millions of people.
